I managed to get the Flu-A virus despite getting my shots and it is a stark reminder that I don’t do sick well at all (ask Barbara). Barbara and I have been continuously ill since December 17, passing bugs back and forth as symbols of our deep, undying, and complete commitment to each other. Actually, what went through my mind overnight (as I was unable to sleep, coughing my lungs out, and drinking gallons of Gatorade) is how lucky we are to have access to health care and medicines to combat such maladies, and how foolish, self-defeating, and short-sighted it is that we do not provide universal health care in this country.
I also reflected (okay, plundered the Internet) on how devastating various flu strains have been in our country’s history and still are in many parts of the world today. Flu is nasty (thank you so much God…) yet there are many ways to mitigate and lessen the negative impacts. This is not a case of not being able to provide aid, we simply don’t want everyone to be healthy. We have the means but lack the will and desire.
Barbara and I mask when we have to go out or be around other people, but I am still flabbergasted by the number of people resistant to masking on behalf of the health of family, friends, and neighbors. During COVID I stopped at a gas station in northern Wisconsin that had this sign on the door: “If you wear a mask, don’t even think about coming in – you will NOT be served. We believe in the healing power of God not the phony scams of liberals.” Now, this is a clear statement of position, but to what possible positive end? This station owner guaranteed that he would have a decrease in business when serving as many customers as possible was just common sense. I wear a mask for my own health, but much more I do so as a consideration for those around me. It floors me when people respond with hostile remarks and/or obscene gestures.
When did taking care of the members of our community fall out of style? When did Christians decide that minor sacrifices and discomforts have nothing to do with our faith and witness? Why is it so hard to err to the side of caution instead of disregard for neighbors? What gospel are so many “people of faith” reading that makes anger, resentment, selfishness, hostility, mockery, and contempt core tenets of Christianity?
I know, I am being negative and don’t want to paint with too broad a brush, but hey, I don’t feel good, and as I led with, I don’t do sick well…
